July/Aug 2019 edition Issue #6 AutoMobilia Resource Magazine Amy Markle So many car events, so little time! It’s hard to believe it’s already June and car show season is in full swing. April brought the New York International Auto Show, which is a showcase for the newest cars, but if you look closely, there is automoblia to be found too, like this wonderful Cadillac Eldorado Promo model car display (below). Promo models were made for car manufacturers as exact scale model examples of their full-size counterparts, and were often given away or sold at the dealerships.
Another must do Porsche event is Luftgekuhlt. This air-cooled only Porsche event was held at the Universal Studios Backlot in California in May. Although this was a “vacation” trip for me, I was still on the lookout for cool automobilia and I wasn’t disappointed. Beautifully detailed grille badges (right)decorated many of the cars, but the coolest thing was the official poster art (right) made on demand. While in Cali I visited the Rose Bowl Flea Market. Among other things I spotted a vintage 1970’s Pep Boys (Manny, Mo and Jack) countertop display, San Francisco Sports Car Club accessories, racing jackets and “The Lively Set” movie poster. All Pictured below. Below: The Greenwich Concours d’Elegance increased their vendor presence this year to include artwork, books, clothing, jewelry, and vintage automobilia. Andrew Male of Motorology, (Motorology.com) was a first-time attendee, and our own Marshall Buck was on hand to promote the magazine and of course sell subscriptions!

From West coast to East coast in a matter of days, The Amelia Island Concours was next on my schedule. 3 days of cars, seminars, auctions and automobilia shopping!

Above: The Sebring 12 Hours race is an exciting event to be sure but people watching is an additional perk. John Hartman, a race fan for more than 50 years has an impressive collection of original race tickets and buttons, dating to the 1960s, which he wears proudly on his hat. John is a walking bit of motor racing history!
Left" At the Lakeland VW Classic, I met John Bickel, JohnBickelSigns.com, creator of impressively large signs made of wood but finished to look like metal. He’s been making them for 20 years and his specialty is giant license plates customized with the client’s car year/state/vanity plate number. Luckily, they are light enough to easily be hung on a wall. Look for me and my mobile book store (GoMotorbooks) this summer at: The Paddock Classic Car Restorations Grand Opening Car Show, New Britain, CT, May 18 Trans-Am at Lime Rock Park, May 24-27 • Greenwich Concours, June 1-2 • German Car Day at Larz Anderson Auto Museum, June 16 Microcar Classic (July 14) and British Car Day (June 23) at Larz Anderson Auto Museum • IMSA at Lime Rock Park, July 19-20 AM |

Event travel will soon begin in earnest and I look forward to sharing my discoveries with you. In the meantime here are some new products I’ve found for 2019 and some belated finds from 2018.
Automobilia can be found anywhere, even at NY Now, the wholesale trade show held annually in New York City. These race influenced travel bags and accessories are made from recycled car fabrics and seat belts, produced in France, and definitely caught my eye. Entre2retros.com |
A trip to the New York Toy Fair in February proved worthwhile this year. Upcoming diecast models were presented by M2, Greenlight, Maisto/Bburago, Carrera and Scalextric slot cars to name a few. Playforever displayed a large selection of their cars which are perfect for kids and kids at heart. Rufus, the racing dog, is one of their newest designs playforever.co.uk |

Despite cold rainy weather at the Rolex 24 at Daytona race in January, Mitch Bishop and Mark Raffauf had an exceptional debut of their new book “IMSA 1969-1989”. Both men have a long history with IMSA and their expertise shows in the depth and quality of their writing. They will be attending many IMSA and SVRA races throughout the season. Be sure to pick up a copy and have it signed.
Italian inspired scooters by Ambosstoys will be available in April 2019. Handmade of metal and powder coated for durability, these ride on toys are a timeless design intended to last for many years to come. Ambosstoys.com |
VW owners have long been leaders in collecting and using unique automobilia.

An early VW Beetle sports an original tool kit, another has a rat rod style accessory STOP light attached to the back bumper, and finally there was an oval window Beetle with a ski rack on the engine cover of the car. All three were seen at California’s Solvang Veteranentreffen.
Today images of Volkswagens, and in particular the Bus, can be found on nearly everything! Noteworthy Paper & Press, also at NY Now, had a selection of Camper related items including postcards, notepads, key chains and pins. The Monster Factory made a limited number VW Bus rolling coolers, the perfect accessory for weekend camping in a Samba. EuroGraphics puzzles produces a selection of car related puzzles which includes one depicting VW Buses. |
Hint: Don’t overlook local auctions & flea markets for automobilia. Raucher Brothers Auctioneers in Florence, MA offered a pair of enamel Esso drip signs in January which sold for more than $900. Brimfield (MA) flea market is a venerable treasure trove, where I saw this Winner Cut Plug Smoke and Chew metal box with a early racing scene. AM |

After a whirlwind of motoring events this Summer and Fall, it was nice to have a few weeks of down time during November & December to reflect on another great year on the road. I looked through our photos and found some interesting memories to share.

In vendor areas, you may find favorite artists creating a new automotive piece in their booth. Both Steve Petrosky (right) driversroad.com and Roger Warick (below) rogerwarwick.com have been spotted at Daytona, Sebring, Road America and Road Atlanta doing just that! Added bonus, you can have your purchase signed by the artist. |

What a whirlwind the past 6 weeks has been with events on both coasts! Car Week in CA included Automobilia Monterey, held at the Embassy Suites, Seaside, where the focus is on original memorabilia. Artwork, badges, books, model cars, photos, posters, sculptures and so much more are available from 40 vendors from all over the world. In 2019, this event will expand to 3 days. Find out more about new times at automobiliamonterey.com
Hugh Ruthven of The Finish Line, at Automobilia Monterey 2018, had some beautiful St. Christopher medals from ‘20s to ‘60s, mostly in the art deco style. St. Christopher is the Patron Saint of Travel, and has been seen in many cars, blessing their safety and travel. Typically affixed to wood or metal dashboards with screws – so they wouldn’t be stolen. Most produced in France and cloisonné. Prices range from $70 to $500. 847-382-3020 or thefinishlinestore.com | ![]() |
