May/June 2019 edition Issue #5 AutoMobilia Resource Magazine Allen Spurlin In 1937, Gil Elvgren began painting calendar pin-ups for one of America’s leading publishing co’s, where he created about 60 works on 28″×22″ canvas with a distinguishing printed signature. Many of his pin-ups were reproduced as nose art on military aircraft during WW II. Around 1944, Gil was approached by Brown and Bigelow, where he began working with 30″×24″ canvases, a format he would use for the next 30 years, and signed his work in cursive.
