My fascination with S&H Green Stamps started in the early 1960s when I traveled with my Dad between Seattle, Washington, and Portland, Oregon on highway 99. I would look forward to the next gas stop at a Standard or Richfield station, as these were Dads favorites. The S&H Green Stamp sign would be prominently displayed under the gas sign, letting you know  that S&H Stamps came with a fill up. The rest of the trip was spent licking and sticking stamps in the redemption book. My recollection is that it took thousands of stamps to redeem even a toaster!

Original S&H Green Stamps Sign 20”x28” still affordable at $150-$500.
S&H Green Stamps started in the 1930s, and ran to the late 1980s, operated by the Sperry & Hutchinson company. They boasted that their rewards book was the largest publication in the United States, and they issued three times more stamps than the U.S Postal System.
If you have ever owned an old car, then I’m sure you have found old S&H Stamps stuffed in the glove box or under the seats. One of the very first signs purchased in our collection is an S&H sign, which we still have today. These signs are unique and colorful, especially the later versions, and can be a nice addition to a sign collection. The original signs are still very affordable: $150- $500, depending on size and condition. Reproduction versions are: $40 - $200.

Wolfs Head Oil Sign Wolverine Lubricants Co New York
Circa 1900s.
WolfsHeadOriginalSign
Circa 1940s-1950s. Dimensions: 58"x34".
Wolf’s Head Oil signs have some of the most interesting graphics, especially the ones from the 1920s and 1930s. Wolf’s Head Oil company was founded in 1879 in Oil City, Pennsylvania, shortly after the original oil wells were drilled in the area in 1861. In the early years, Wolf’s Head Oil was marketed under “Pennsylvania Crude” “Finest Of The Fine” and “Run With The Wolf.”
The original signs were produced in a number of shapes and sizes, which make them stand out in any collection.

Both images pictured here are of original signs, and the rectangular one is from our collection.

Washington Chief Gasoline Sign

Picture
Original Washington Chief Gasoline sign. This brand was created by the Inland Refinery in Spokane, Washington, which operated between 1939 and 1957. Inland had plans to open stations in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. The porcelain signs were produced and ready to mount as their new stations opened. Inland opened the 1st station in Spokane followed by Aberdeen, shortly thereafter they were bought out by Wasatch Oil.

The original signs went into storage with little to no value, only to start surfacing in the 1990s when a few of these signs in NOS condition turned up in an antique store in Seattle.  I bought two, kept one, and sold the other. The original 6-foot signs have vibrant colors and have become very collectable and valuable. Prices for originals run between $20,000 and $75,000.

42” reproduction, which does not replace or devalue the originals, but allows someone to enjoy owning an affordable version of this sign at $300-$400.
