Sail Harbour News Highlights:
Sept 29, 2022 - Thursday
Ian blew in yesterday at a cat 4 and Sail Harbour condos were right in the zone unfortunately!
The water came up about 2 inches from the doors at unit 103 (Dave Ives), Janine (neighbor) has been inside his unit this morning and it is dry by the patio doors as well. Dave’s kayak hanging from the ceiling rode out the storm just fine…

Sept 30, 2022 - Friday
Janine our neighbor in the duplex to the North is now living in Dave Ives unit (103). Her house needs cleaning from flooding/mud but she thinks she has someone on the way to help. She says it feels much like a 3rdworld country must be like, looks like a complete disaster zone. Long line at 7-11 for water. - no water – she is getting water from the pool for flushing, etc. The city is making water a priority over electric. - no electric - she does have plenty of food for herself at this time - hardly anything is open - she cannot get news or weather reports on her phone – only texting with words. The cell service is very spotty – she cannot call, or send pictures. Only word texts. I wish we could get pictures, but she cannot get any to come through. We know the pool room and pool area did get flooded as they are lower than our building. Janine has confirmed that no water made it into units 102 or 103. We know 203 is not leaking so far. We know the condo building to the South where Denny and Karen live did get water in all the lower units. David finally got a text from Aleda yesterday saying she was ok, but that was all he got. Uta is stopping by to take pictures today, and then leaving so she should be able to send them to us. |
Oct 1, 2022 - Saturday
Uta went by and took pictures yesterday and then drove back to Naples where she is staying, and she could send them! Many thanks to Uta!
It is certainly a lot to take in… from the pics it looks like:
- damage to pool room in several places
- damage to Don/Donna’s screen door
- damage to Scott’s truck
- Greg’s car looks ok, the carport over his car did not blow off. (Note from Greg: I just thought that I should let you know that when my carport was damaged several years ago , it was replaced by John Hull. His phone number is area code 239-226-1000.)
- an A/C unit is off its pad. Not sure if it is for 101 or 201. The breaker to that unit has been turned off. The breaker to the pool house has been turned off.
- The pool looks nice and refreshing… (sarcasm)
Uta saw an electric truck in the neighborhood and spoke with the guys, and they said electric will be fixed in about two weeks hopefully.
No word yet on when water will be restored.
From the satellite photos – we zoomed in the best we could and the solar panels are gone, and it looks like there is damage to roof on South end. There is also some roof shingles on the ground in one of the pictures. Dave is reaching out to a roofer today to see if we can get it inspected and a tarp on if needed.

Oct 2, 2022 - Sunday
Aleda finally has a generator working and is in communication. Her home flooded, she is checking on insurance information for our building, etc. Uta went by and took more pictures yesterday of the roof, and went into 201 and 202 and didn’t see any water damage except to the patio on unit 201. She also brought people with her and they all went over to help with Janine’s house. Today she is hoping she can come back and empty refrigerators and unplug them. We believe 201 and 101 are already unplugged and empty. I think she is planning to empty the fridges in 102, 103, 202 and 203. The fridge in 204 has already been emptied by Rene a friend of Cindy's. Again…. Many, many, many thanks to Uta! Greg should be back Oct 7. You can sign up for updates from USA today by text which everyone can do here it’s quite useful: https://joinsubtext.com/hurricaneian_ian This was a link they sent which really shows how bad Ian was and how lucky we were to not have more damage: See Hurricane Ian damage city by city across Florida https://bit.ly/3Ed8rmj No word from Blackie yet, but she is scrappy… we haven’t given up hope. Scott sent along this picture of Blackie on his boat looking rather Queenly over her domain. We found a Cat 1 through Cat 5 scale online that kind of explains things. |

Oct 3, 2022 continued...
Logistics:
- Dave has an appointment with a roofing co to fix the roof. Affordable Roofing name of Co.
- Aleda – hoping to hear from soon about insurance.
- Pool – looked it up, and even though it is very dirty we should NOT empty it, which could cause other major problems. Not sure when pool service will return.
- We tried to shut the water off to the pool house figuring piping is broken, and we can’t find the shut-off valves – not as in we don’t know where they are – but as in Ian blew them away!
- The breaker was turned off on the AC unit which is off its pad.
- The fridges have been emptied and unplugged: 102, 103, 202, 203 and 204. (I think)
- The fridges were already emptied and unplugged: 101 and 201.
- Water has about half pressure and is coming back.
- Electricity is probably another week away to being fixed.
FEMA – Our friend Marian worked for them for several years and told us this:
Individual condo owners can apply. However, only full-time residents can get assistance. Non-full-time residents can apply for an SBA loan. The condo association can also apply for a Small Business Admin loan if needed. Our first line of assistance (for the association) should be our insurance. To contact/apply call 800-621-3362 or https://www.disasterassistance.gov
Or there is an app you can download on your phone.

Sail Harbour News, Sun, Oct 4, 2022. Marion says to wash off the sides of your hot water heaters and AC units as they have been exposed to salt water. I’m going to ask Uta’s son Felix, to see if he has time to do this. FPL reports electricity should be back in most areas Sat, Oct 10. Another 1,000 workers have arrived to help with the task. Uta is headed to Long Island to stay at her boss’s vacation home for a few months so she can get back to work and out of the mess of hurricane aftermath. Janine is cleaning her place – a daunting task. Her cell service is still spotty (comcast cell) and she cannot send pics or get on internet, and texts take several trys. Publix is open but it takes 3 hours to deal with lines and parking. They don’t have much. Aleda is going to contact our insurance company today to start process of claims. We still really don’t know the extent of damages. |
