David started collecting movie posters while attending elementary school. While growing up, all his friends had fathers who were involved in movies and TV. His grandfather was a famous cameraman working his way through medical school. One friend’s dad had the Batmobile in the garage… his dad was Batman! He gained appreciation for movie posters early in life which grew considerably with time.
After collecting and dealing for many years, he sold the majority of his collection at a one-owner live sale held by RM Auctions in Monterey, with a color 100-page catalog. The Mystery of USA Movie Poster Sizes
Issue #12 Sept/Oct 2020 US one sheet, six sheets, three sheets, inserts… What does it all mean? Before we tackle the Pandora’s box of movie poster sizes, I must say it has been a very exciting road of collecting car related movie posters, from the first ones I bought as a kid from other kids at school, to later buying them all over the world. A lot has happened in movie posters since the first one was produced by the French artist Marcellin Auzille for a 49 second slapstick comedy in 1895. The first car racing movie was “Paris to Monte Carlo”, 1905. This was a ten-minute silent short film. Not sure if there was a poster for that one, but most likely there was a poster for “Barney Oldfield’s Race for Life”, or “The Speed Kings”, both released in 1913. These were the second and third car racing movies ever released. Pictured Left: “Thunder in Carolina” The rare three sheet (81”x41”) poster in two panels. This poster is for the 1960 film featuring racing at the Great Southern 500. The movie stars Rory Calhoun and Alan Hale Jr. Excellent condition. Value $1,200 |
